Delta Moon – Black Cat Oil
By Paul Scholman
(Translated from Dutch)
Delta Moon -- the name is already gorgeous. Black Cat Oil is
the newest, the sixth from this Georgia group. The first two CDs were with singer Gina Leigh. After she left
came replacement singer Kristen Markiton, and
when she later also
left the band the two founders Mark Johnson and Tom Gray,
together an excellent slide tandem, decided not
to replace her, and Tom Gray took
on the vocals for his account. Tom's voice,
a bit rough, sounds good with the double
slide guitars, which evoke in me something
of JJ Cale and
the late Warren Zevon. I think a nice comparison.
Southern Swamp with two slide guitars sounds nice and creamy, swampy,
southern rocky and leans a bit country. With headphones on, you struggle with relaxedness
not to turn into a complete road hiker. Not that it's boring, but that is the peace that this CD exudes. Hell Bound Train, their
previous CD, was already great, and Black Cat Oil sits nearby.
Tom Gray of Delta Moon is the songwriter
and writes most of the songs, generally with a certain tranquility, but occasionally an uptempo song comes up from his toes.
This is roots music blended with a genuine whiskey
voice and there will
undoubtedly be some smoke and
black coffee, but that’s only for the better.
Gray was voted "Blues Songwriter of the Year 2008” by
The American Roots Music Association.
Hop out the nearest
record dealer, even though these days
they are hard to find. Unfortunately,
they die off and only the strong remain, and those are the ones who have an eye for quality. Delta Moon with Black Cat Oil offers
this quality.
